How Pre-existing Medical Conditions effect Individual Health Insurance

A large number of Americans have health-related issues that health insurance companies define as pre-existing conditions. Pre-existing condition are health problems that started before you apply for individual health insurance. You may have to disclose any pre-existing condition before receiving health insurance quotes.

Individual health insurance companies are in business to make money. They know that people with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or cancer will put in more claims. Pre-existing conditions are usually chronic problems that require continual care or treatment on a regular basis. People with pre-existing conditions may pay higher premiums, have higher deductibles or have a longer waiting period before the individual health insurance coverage starts.

When applying for health insurance quotes, you must disclose any pre-existing conditions if asked. This way you will know exactly when your individual health insurance coverage will start for your pre-existing condition. You may not have full coverage for six to eighteen months. For example, if you have asthma and break your leg, the broken leg would be covered but not the asthma medication for six to eighteen months.

Don’t try to lie about pre-existing conditions. Your medical records will give you away and you may lose all of your coverage. Always check the laws in your state, you may be able to switch individual health insurance companies without any pre-existing condition exclusions.
